Religious Quote: Joseph Ratzinger

A just laicism allows religious freedom. The state does not impose religion but rather gives space to religions with a responsibility toward civil society, and therefore it allows these religions to be factors in building up society.
Joseph Ratzinger

Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. There may be legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not... with regard to abortion and euthanasia.
Joseph Ratzinger

Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church is often labeled today as fundamentalism. Whereas relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and swept along by every wind of teaching, look like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards.
Joseph Ratzinger

The wrath of God is a way of saying that I have been living in a way that is contrary to the love that is God. Anyone who begins to live and grow away from God, who lives away from what is good, is turning his life toward wrath.
Joseph Ratzinger

To me, its seems necessary to rediscover - and the energy to do so exists - that even the political and economic spheres need moral responsibility, a responsibility that is born in man's heart and, in the end, has to do with the presence or absence of God.
Joseph Ratzinger

The Cross is the approbation of our existence, not in words, but in an act so completely radical that it caused God to become flesh and pierced this flesh to the quick; that, to God, it was worth the death of his incarnate Son.
Joseph Ratzinger

We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires.

Overcoming and Facing Difficulties

Author’s Note- In this theme essay, it talks about all the main themes in the recent book I have read, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It makes connections to life, another book and  gives advice about how to handle adversities. As you are reading, pay close attention to the A/B Transition.

A college student is having trouble with a relationship, a grandfather is facing an illness and a student is struggling with stage fright and can’t perform in the talent show, are all examples of adversity. Everyone has difficulties in their lifetime and struggle to overcome them. The characters in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys prove that overcoming adversity is challenging, but possible. An example of overcoming adversity is demonstrated by Harry, Ron and Hermione from the book Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, by J.K. Rowling. These characters experience discovery and success in overcoming the adversity they face.

Overcoming adversity is very difficult, but the choices and decisions that you make in the present, can determine your way of life in the future. For example, when you are in high school, getting prepared to take an ACT to get into college, you also have to decide what job you want. If you get into a really good college, you may qualify for a high standard job. Reason why, is because you could get a job where you earn large amounts of money because of the high quality college that you got into and if you get into an average or a not so great college, you may not qualify for a decent job and earn a lot of money, then you won’t be able to buy a house and make a family and you’ll have to move back in with your parents. In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, the main character who had to make major decisions in his life was Harry. For example, when Harry lost his parents and had to move with his cousins, The Dursleys, he had a choice to go to Hogwarts after receiving millions of letters from the school. When you think about it, if Harry said “no,” and rejected going to Hogwarts, what would the rest of his life be like compared to what really happened? As you can see, this was a major decision that Harry had to think about and why making the right choices matters in our life.

Although the choices and decisions that you make in your life are very important, the effects of war on the society play a big role in the book and families. Throughout the second part of the novel, the effects of war happen often because everyone in Hogwarts defends Harry so the task that the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore gave Harry can be completed, which is defeating Lord Voldemort. As time goes on, many of Harry’s friends and adult friends are being eliminated by the Dark Lord to protect Harry. Its the same concept on families. When a family has a son or daughter go into the war to fight for our freedom, they don’t know if they will come back. The war would end, but someone may come to your front door and tell you that your son or daughter is gone. Going into war to fight for our freedom or to protect one person to complete a task affects families in life and in the book. Knowing that your child is going into battle, you could spend years thinking about them, not knowing if they have been killed or not. In the book, everyone at Hogwarts is like one big family. They protect each other and help one another. Towards the end, small gathering funerals were held for the loved ones that passed away. The same thing occurs in real life. After the wars end, you may discover that your child, friend or family member did not survive the battle.

Considering that losing a loved one in a battle is hard, family will help you journey through your life. In reality, family is extremely important. Throughout my life, I sometimes tell myself that I am not worthy of being in my family and I have struggled to gain that strength to be in a family. I sometimes think of myself as an outcast compared to my sister, mom and dad. After years and years of doubting myself and thinking that I am lost and have no one in my life, I know that wherever I go or no matter what I do, my family will always be by my side and be with me no matter what. I am very lucky to have such an extraordinary family that I can love and talk to and know that they are in my heart. Unlike Harry, he grew up not knowing who his parents were and having his whole childhood completely blank. The only people that he has that are considered his family are Ron and Hermione, his two best friends, and everyone at Hogwarts. As mentioned earlier, everyone at that school treat each other like family. There is nothing more greater than having a family right by your side, loving you and caring for you everyday until the end of time.

As well as having a great family, J.K. Rowling expresses the many themes throughout the Harry Potter novel. J.K. Rowling and Ruta Sepetys both show that many people face difficult adversities but that there is a possible way to overcome them, even though it will be challenging. The characters in Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows demonstrated how knowing that life is difficult, family, friends or adults can help you shine the light through your struggles. Many people in the world lose their families, like Harry in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows or friends, like Lina in Between Shades of Grey. When I go to school and I see my friends with their brothers or sisters fighting, they sometimes come up to me and ask if I get along with my sister. The main reason why people ask me this is because they say to me that they hate their brother or sister and they would trade them for anything but their sibling. It breaks my heart when people say that and sooner or later, their sibling will move out of the house and get married and go to college. I love my sister and I would do anything for her, but I would never in my life trade her for anything else. In some cases, the difficulties in life can help you in the future, just as long as you have someone right beside you to guide you through your rough times.
